This was my church this morning. We filled bellies. We laughed with homeless people. A man using a walker told Kimble that we gave him hope. A man with one leg was happy to see us again. We gave a homeless man a pair of dress shoes for his upcoming interview. I climbed over yellow tape, through shrubbery and broken tree branches, to get to a guy balled up in discarded insulation. Said he used to be a minister. We blessed him with a brand new sleeping bag. THIS was my church today!

Monday night I saw more young people. More old people. Black people; white people; Asian people ... more homeless human beings than before. 'Tis the season to...GIVE! Keep a sleeping bag in your car, a warm blanket in your trunk, an old hoodie in your backseat. Hand it to someone! Don't be shy. You will be shocked by their gratitude. #BabyItsColdOutside #TisTheSeason #DontBeShy #BrownBagLady

This morning Brown Bag Lady & Crew gave back by donating our time at Greater New Light Baptist Church in Watts and the Lou Williams Foundation. We helped hand out 200 turkeys and all the fixens. We were welcomed with open arms and huge smiles. Great Day!

The #1 request I get is for my red beans & rice. So I made two huge pots and we made sure they were given to the hands of a forgotten group of people … the homeless. It was ladies night last night for us. THANK YOU SHAWN! AND TERI for all of your help and...capturing some amazing pictures.

Driving down dark alleys, and slowing down to look in a doorway trying to figure out is a discarded blanket really a person balled up trying to stay warm for the night, can sometimes get us down. It's sad... lifting up a piece of plastic blue tarp to find young people underneath, shivering from the cold, just trying to stay warm and dry from the rain. Last night we met some beautiful souls and had some very wonderful conversations. We laughed and smiled and we filled up many bellies.

1. SAM's papa is permanently in a wheelchair. They share every meal; 2. MAX's dad is deaf; 3. DOBBY peeking out from the sleeping bag waiting patiently for mama to return home to their tent; 4. WHYNO and her mama are both often shoeless; 5. LETICIA's dad is deaf and he explained she...rescued...him.

There is a perfectly cute homeless lady, mid-30s, that I often cross paths with in Hollywood. She is always dressed cute. She has implants-a good set. She often has on Havaiana flip-flops with a big cute floral crystal in the middle and her blonde highlights are on point. Juicy sweats, and a Tiffany cross that she ALWAYS has on. Her eyes ... they are a beautiful-beautiful deep blue. She looks like she would be at the park waiting for her kids after soccer practice. I'm rolling down the street Friday night, passing out food. I see this tiny little head sticking out of a ratty old red blanket against a chain-link fence. It was her. Sitting there crying with a busted lip, a toenail broken back all the way to the cuticle, and bloody knuckles. Her boyfriend beat her up. They live in a tent. I sat with her trying to convince her to go to the police, go back to her family in San Diego, her two children (9 and 11), her mom and dad who beg her every day to come back home. I tried, but there was no convincing her. She cried. We hugged. I cried. (Thank you Shawn Thornton for capturing this pic)

This is my best-friend. We met as bony, goofy school girls in the 6th grade. I can count on one hand the times I have seen her cry. After the birth of her first child, she moved from LA to Atlanta. That was almost 25 years ago. She and I talk on the phone every...single...day 10 times a day and make it a point to visit each other at least three times a year. A few months back, she came for a visit. One of our stops to pass out food was a homeless man named Walter. There he was, sitting on the bus bench, reading a book. Always reading a book. Tamie goes back home. She called every day "Jackie, did you check on Walter?!" Yes Tamie, he's fine. "Jackie, I was looking at the weather report for LA, and they said it might rain tonight…" Walter is fine Tamie. He survived 19 years on the streets b4 we met him. Before heading back to the ATL, I clicked this picture of Tamie hugging Walter goodbye at the bus bench. Six months later, she hugged him goodbye again, but this time in his first apartment in 19 years. She cried all the way home.

This is Blue. You will never find him without his guitar. I think it's down to one string now. He absolutely loves music and loves telling stories of his glory days as a musician. I didn't want to wake him, but I'm happy I did, and so was he.🎸 🎼💙🎼 🎸#OnceAMusician #AlwaysAMusician#DontKnowIfBlueIsHisRealName #DontCare #BrownBagLady

Friday night in Hollywood. Red velvet ropes, limos, bouncers, fellas laughing and girls triple-checking their lipstick between giggles. Turn the corner, and tents line the alleys and back doorways to those posh entrances. #Hollywood #DontStepOverThem #HomelessEpidemic#BrownBagLady

Even though it is still schmoken hot in L.A., folks still request red beans and rice EVERY time I see them. So Sunday, I made a big pot and me, Teri, and Shawn rolled out.

Success on a Sunday night! One guy asked where there is a soul food restaurant in Hollywood. He couldn't believe I made the food. LoLoL!#BrownBagLady #MamaCanThrowDown #YouBettaAskSomebody#MadeWithLove

Sometimes dinner for my family includes dinner for a homeless man on a bus bench.
August 10, 2016
Minding my own binness, driving down the street after work. Not in Brown Bag Lady mode. I look over and who do I see?! One of my favorite homeless people, asleep on the bus bench. No jacket. No sleeping bag. No old comforter. "Where is all of your stuff?!" It all got stolen.

It felt like a thousand degrees in the kitchen, making red beans and rice. Whenever I started to complain, I imagined how hot that asphalt must be. #NoComplaints #IHaveaRoofOverMyHead #BrownBagLady

Friday Night Happy-Hour with Brown Bag Lady.
July 22, 2016
Last night was the first time that my best-friend, from the 6th grade, was able to join us. She lives in John's Creek, Georgia, and they can probably count the homeless people on one hand. To see her teenage son's innocent face and listen to his "but...why" questions was a beautiful thang. If we take the time to teach them young enough, hopefully we can all work together to try and feed and clothe the less fortunate ... everywhere!

When the awesome office you work at orders too much food for a staff luncheon. Rolled around passing out food last night. #CuveePasta#Starbucks #ItWasARoughWeekForMePersonally #ButNotAsRoughAsTheirEveryDay #EveryoneIsBattlingSomething #BrownBagLady

I don't think there is one word to describe the look on these children's faces when they received their backpack full of school supplies. Brown Bag Lady and crew delivered 100 brand-new backpacks to some VERY-VERY grateful children! THANK YOU Trudi Taylor for connecting me to the amazing Aleta Williams! In the voice of Ice Cube... Today was a good day!!

Just a regular ole Tuesday night. Worked all day, ✔️. Stopped for gas, ✔️. Made red beans & rice, ✔️. Loaded up my truck with two cases of water, ✔️. Drove around L.A. and passed out food, ✔️.

For me... It is imperative that we keep our young people aware of the homeless epidemic. Thanks to my amazing office, we spent our Memorial Day weekend passing out delicious meals from El Cholo Mexican restaurant.
May 23, 2016
One of the biggest complaints I hear from homeless people, is having dirty clothes. Imagine having nowhere to sleep, eat, shower, or ... wash your clothes. Things we take for granted, others call a "luxury." This morning, we helped some folks do their laundry.

Sunday dinner for a few of my friends. Smothered chicken with rice & gravy, cabbage, and a cornbread muffin. I wasn't going to eat all of this anyway.

People are hungry. Dogs are hungry. Brown Bag Lady delivers food for both. 🐾💜🐾

On my way to the office, running late, but I just couldn't pass this young man up. He was SO happy for a Brown Bag Lady goodie bag.

Did what we love last night... Rolled around Hollywood passing out food on a Friday night.
April 24, 2016
Tonight was AMAZING!! We met so many colorful characters along the way. I love the lady with the purple hair...in honor of Prince!
April 18, 2016
Rolled around Hollywood Blvd last night, passing out food. No matter how often I go, I am amazed at the epidemic of homeless people and how we have become numb to seeing them.

My...how my Saturday nights have changed.
March 13, 2016
The cast of characters we meet are hilarious!
March 09, 2016
Just got in from rolling around Hollywood passing out sandwiches, fruit and water. When I tell you I am exhausted ... Believe it! But the looks on people's faces tonight and their gratitude, made it all worth it.
March 05, 2016
Just two years later ... This is what THREE HUNDRED chicken enchilada meals looks like!! Get ready Skid Row!! Rain or shine tomorrow ... Brown Bag Lady is comen for ya!! A HUGE... HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mike Richardson for making this happen! I love you!
March 02, 2016
After working all day, we decided to roll down Hollywood Blvd and pass out red beans & rice and sandwiches tonight. Hollywood was like a ghost town. One of the homeless guys told us they did a "sweep" for the Academy Awards. What started off slow, ended up being quite a magical night thanks to two complete strangers who appeared out of nowhere and the husband reached into his pocket and gave us a wonderful donation. Reminding me once again ... there is no such thing as a coincidence.

The holidays have come and gone. The excitement of December is over. We rung in another new year! As you try and stay committed to those resolutions, don't forget... people are still hungry, people are cold and many many are still homeless.

Did an impromptu Brown Bag Lady. Didn't have my regular crew, did not have our banquet tables to set up, but the positive energy and the heart was just the same. We handed out 100 brownbag lunches to some very grateful folks just before my flight back to La-La Land
