Out n’ About
Brown Bag Lady & Crew... Out n' About hitting the streets!
December 29, 2017
My baby cousin visiting from Norcal. After a 6-hour car ride, WITH TWINS, she was still down to pass out food on a Friday night. I ❤️ you!

For a 15-year old from the Palisades, the homeless epidemic is not part of her reality. She doesn’t see many “HOMELESS & HUNGRY” cardboard signs near her home. There aren’t many grocery carts along PCH and Sunset. But she came out with us last night ready to WORK! And work she did! From taping a positive quote onto to-go containers in preparation for our Christmas meal next week, making burritos (I have a newfound respect for Taco Bell workers), to getting down and dirty in alleys and dimly lit sidestreets. Kudos mama bear Madeline Loef. Isabella will be a remarkable addition to this crazy mixed-up world!

If you can have fun passing out food to homeless people, then that’s what happened Friday night. We laughed, we hugged, we listened to stories, we passed out 40 containers of red beans and rice, and a wwwwhollllle lotta hope.

I’ve been driving around with Uncle Gene’s cane for over a year. When he passed, my aunt asked if perhaps anyone could use a cane. Many-many times I heard “Wwwhyyyyy are you driving around with a cane?! That cane is in the way!” Welp! Uncle Gene’s cane helped my homeless buddy Michael, take a few steps last night.

Filling bellies, quenching thirst, sharing stories, shaking hands, cracking jokes, flipping U-turns. Alleys, chain link fences, dark doorways, unpaved sidewalks, side streets, side bars. I need a side car . Must be Friday night with Kimble Jemison Deener. #Hollywood #Homeless #Hope

During the day, I kept calling home from the office, telling my brother to "stir the pot of beans...check the flame..." Once a pesty little sister, always a pesty little sister.

One week ago, I put out a plea for "kitchen items" for my homeless buddy, Red. To every beautiful soul that reached out to me, I thank you! Carol Hurtado, I thank you for driving to my office and bringing me dishes and a flat screen t.v. Christine VanZandt, you have had a horrific and heartbreaking year, but through your sorrow, you blessed me with amazing, brand-new, beautiful items for someone you will probably never meet. Ladies, we did the damn thang!! And to my nephew Miles Norvell and his girlfriend Nadine Maghirang, I could not have had this AMAZING day without your help!! Seven hours of serious manual labor later...I LOVE YOU!!

I thought it might be too hot for red beans & rice. I was very-very-wrong!

Leaving the market, I found Bower sitting on the sidewalk. I asked him if he was hungry and he shrugged "not really." You thirsty? "not really." He asked for $$. I went into my speech with much attitude "I don't give out money! If you're hungry or thirsty, I will buy you food or get you something cold to drink, but I'm not giving you any money!" He said "It's so hot! I just want an ice cream, ma'am."

About last night...
July 28, 2017
Thank you Starbucks for blessing me with all of this food every Friday night. Because of your generosity, I am able to feed thousands of homeless people every year.

There's just something special about passing out food with your child. I ...ALWAYS... love doing it! But watching my son hand food to young adults, no older then him, and laughing & joking, making fun of me and technology, made it extra special. Joshua Bowen is the reason I started Brown Bag Lady ❤️ and watching him in action, confirmed ... he is a remarkable addition to this crazy mixed-up world!

L👀👀K AT ALL OF THIS FOOD!! Crazy, right?!? When I put it in the bin, I don't think you can quite appreciate just how much it is. Salads and sandwiches and protein packs. And we passed out every...single...item.
July 10, 2017
Driving down the street with Kimble Jemison Deener, we spotted a row of tents. Unfortunately, this is the norm for us. We noticed a young adult, maybe 20 yrs old, exit a tent. There was also a group of 21 year olds chatting and goofing off, dancing to music. We pull over. Such a funny and crazy group of kids. I asked what they need/want. The answer was unanimous...a home cooked meal. Brown Bag Lady went home and the next day, I put my "mama" apron on.

It is HOT!! Keep some cold water in your car for the homeless and their pups. Please. Thank you!

Friday night sho'nuff ain't what it used to be. After a laaawwwng work week, I would meet the girls for HappyHour and giggle and laugh and "toast" and taxi home...whenever. I thought I was having so much fun. I am positive there were never this many homeless people in L.A. Or maybe my young naïve eyes just didn't notice them. My Friday nights now consist of picking up from two very generous Starbucks, so that I am able to bless hundreds of people every week. This is now my fun.

When your neighbor gives you chicken enchiladas and you sit down to enjoy them, but you can't stop thinking about the group of kids you met over the weekend. #Homeless #Hollywood #TentLife #LateNightRun

I was SO happy we found this row of tents full of magical young people. But it also made me SO sad to see so many young people living in tents.

In the ... CLUTCH!! Baby Daddy came through! Red beans simmering, rice in steamer, Starbucks ready to go, three cases of water in the ice chest. Toiletries all packed up; socks; blankets; and sleeping bags. Kimble got hit with the flu. Out for the count. Last minute phone call to Bo and ... BAM! He was at my house within 45 mins. Thanks dude!

Sunday night in Hollywood...

What does AMAZING feel like on a Thursday morning at 8 a.m.?! Like this...
April 23, 2017
SHOUT...OUT of absolute L❤️VE to my co-worker and friend Tanya Moskalenko, for volunteering her children to help the Brown Bag Lady on this spectacularly beautiful Sunday. While most kids are outside playing or enjoying the beach, Elsa & Oliver sat inside a HOT office building, and separated every...single... item. They lugged boxes, they organized 200 backpacks, they sat and taped 200 labels onto water bottles and lined up all of the supplies in order for us to be able to easily put together 200 backpacks tomorrow. You guys RrrrROCK!! 👍🏾✌🏼👍🏽

Imagine being homeless. Imagine being a homeless female. Imagine being a homeless female during "that time of the month." Brown Bag Ladies making sure the females are taken care of with our homemade hygiene baggies. Make a few margaritas, listen to a little Al Green, and we get bizaye!

"For it is in giving that we receive." St. Francis of Assisi. Shout out of absolute ❤LOVE❤️ to @duidough for these deeeelicious banana nut bread! Some I sliced and some I handed out whole. They were received with much gratitude! #HomelessGirl #InaTent #InTheAlley #Grateful#BrownBagLady

Please don't ever think "Nobody wants this old blanket." YES they do! Just before the rain ☔️ last night, I drove around and handed out old blankets. People were so happy to receive them. That concrete is unforgiving!

Sunday-Funday! We handed out a smorgasbord of food on Sunday. My car was packed with everything from red beans & rice to blankets, toiletries, shoes, socks, hand sanitizer, sleeping bags, extra shoe strings, bottled water, and plenty of TLC. #GodsWork#HomelessInHollywood #ChurchIsInsideYou 🙏🏾
He insisted on playing his harmonica for us. 🎶

I decided to venture into a different neighborhood. Far...Far away from the broken dreams of youngsters that line Hollywood. And different from tent city on Skid Row. These folks seemed more tired; more beat down by life; more hopeless. I felt this is where I needed to be this weekend and this is where I was led. I took the 110 S and got off on Florence. No map. I drove where my spirit led me...to many-many hungry souls.
March 12, 2017
I'd be lying if I said "Every time we deliver food, it is amazing." Sometimes the homeless are ungrateful, sometimes they are belligerent, sometimes their mouth is foul. But Sunday was...AMAZING! We laughed, we chopped it up like old pals, we handed out food and water and toiletries and shoes and socks. Always socks.

Minding my own binness las'night. Took Uber to see a play at the Pantages. Felt so good not to drive, for once. Laaawwwd hab mercy, there are alot of homeless folks out'chere! Stay focused Jack...enjoy the ride. Enjoy your evening with Kimble, watching a play and going to dinner. You worked all day. Chill'ax! Listen to the music, look straight ahead! Got home. My feetz hurt. Put on my tennies, found my favorite sweats. I looked at Kimble. Kimble looked at me...

Starbucks is something we quickly grab on our way to the office or a pastry after the gym. No biggie. To some, it will be their only meal of the day. One man hopped off his bike and plopped down on the concrete, another man set his sandwich to the side and got on his knees and prayed. Another man stopped mid-stream pushing his cart.
February 25, 2017
"Are you rich?! How can you always give us food and stuff we need?!" I laughed and said "Honey child, not even close..." before I could finish he said "Rich is richness of the soul..."
February 19, 2017
Kimble Jemison Deener and I started our morning conversation about lunch and brunch and I wanted bottomless mimosas. I mentioned our buddies in the alley and how everything had been wiped out. Before I knew it, our plans were no more. We packed up 45 containers of homemade organic chicken noodle soup, and we rolled around Hollywood. Our bellies were empty. But our hearts were full!

She was not on my list of errands. On my Target run, I couldn't help but drive by the alley where my homeless buddies reside. Gone. The po-po did a sweep on Valentine's Day. Arrested Kat for having a stolen grocery cart and unpaid grocery cart tix (yes that's a real thing). I gave her water, a sleeping bag and I asked her if she is lactose intolerant because I had delicious cheese balls wrapped in Prosecco. She corrected me "prosciutto." Her friend asked "What is pro-shoe-toe?!" Kat answered "Prosciutto is cured ham verrryyy thinly sliced. It's deeelicious, but very salty and ..." I'm standing there getting a culinary lesson when I ask if she'd like a Starbucks pastry, I'm not sure what "bnb" or "pkb" is. She shyly says "Probably banana nut bread or pumpkin bread...sorry! I'm really good at anagrams..."#RealLife #Homeless #Iworry and #Ipray#WatchOverHer #SomeonesChild #BrownBagLady

Climbing over chains, up steps, to find an elderly gentlemen bundled up for the night. It is cold. He is old. It's close to midnight. As I look back and see him enjoying my red beans & rice, what he said is his only meal of the day, I can't help but wonder…does the church know he's sleeping outside on their steps?!
